German analytical solutions provider IKA Group has been awarded the 2018 Red Dot Award for ‘Product Design’ for its innovative ElectraSyn 2.0 electrochemistry system.
Three devices in one
ElectraSyn 2.0’s clean-slate design combines three essential instruments into one package: a potentiostat, an analytical device and a magnetic stirrer, thus marking the first step towards the mainstream adoption of electrochemistry in organic synthesis.

A singular focus
The product was developed over a three-year time period. The combination of two branches of chemistry that normally have little in common was facilitated by a unique collaboration between IKA owner René Stiegelmann and Phil S Baran, a world-renowned professor at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, US.
Engineers and organic chemists worked hand-in-hand in the development of a product that combines the best of electrochemical science with the precise needs and desires of synthetic organic chemists.
An electrifying design
Phil Baran describes the development of the new product as ‘the culmination of years of research at the crossroads of engineering and synthesis’.
Electrochemistry is not new for IKA; the first apparatus was developed and patented in the 1920s by IKA.
ElectraSyn 2.0 was developed by an international team of engineers and chemists. Alongside the ingenious technical solution, special emphasis was placed on high quality, durability and a beautifully intuitive design, now recognised by the Red Dot Design Award.
A patent has been filed for the product and ElectraSyn 2.0 has successfully been on the market since August 2017.
The completely modular ElectraSyn 2.0 system enables users, with and without electrochemistry experience, to develop and explore new electrochemical reactions and transformations, thereby obliterating the previous large barrier to entry in this area.
It provides ideal experimental conditions thanks to ‘Smart Assist’ and it can be used as both a potentiostat and a galvanostat.
It enables the analysis of samples using cyclic voltammetry, digital recording of the experiment and ensures optimal reproducibility.
