Lanxess Cresol Production Plant, Leverkusen, Germany
Lanxess, a specialty chemicals company, began operations of its newly expanded cresol production plant at Leverkusen, Germany, in November 2013. The production plant is part of the company's aromatics network, which is engaged in the manufacture of intermediate products.
The company's aromatics network comprises seven large-scale plants located primarily in Leverkusen, while further finishing stages facilities are located in Krefeld-Uerdingen, Dormagen and Brunsbüttel, Germany. Lanxess manufactures base-chemicals, intermediate products and active substances used in pharmaceuticals and pesticides, rubbers and additives, at Leverkusen.
The cresol plant at Leverkusen primarily serves the Agrochemicals industry. Cresol is also used in the manufacture of vitamin E, aroma chemicals, resins and flame retardants.
Details of Lanxess' Cresol Plant at Leverkusen
Lanxess completed an expansion to its aromatics network in 2010, with an investment of €35m ($42m), as part of its long-term asset strategy to increase the productivity and cater to future market for the Intermediates business unit. As part of this larger project, the company also installed a distillation column measuring 30m-high and weighing 20t, for the separation of the cresol mixtures.
With the expansion, the production capacity for cresols and their derivatives Baynox, Vulkanox BHT and Vulkanox BKF increased by 60%. Using Vulkanox BHT, the company manufactures Baynox, a biodiesel stabiliser which improves the storage stability of biodiesel.
The latest expansion is the second expansion to the cresol production facility in Leverkusen. It was implemented with an investment of €20m (approximately $26.9m), and was completed in November 2013. The expansion took approximately one and half years to complete and involved the installation of a reaction system and a new 46m-high distillation column at the plant. It is expected to increase the production capacity of the plant by 20%.
The new elements installed are expected to help in manufacturing purer form of cresols. The cresol plant is designed to feed back the energy released during production process in the form of steam.
Feedstock for the production of cresols
The feedstocks used in the production of cresols include benzene and toluene, which are further processed using several steps of chemical reaction.
Lanxess conducts operations in 31 countries and has orded sales of €9.1bn (approximately $11.9bn) in 2012. It employs nearly 17,500 employees through its 52 production sites worldwide and employs more than 3,000 people at Leverkusen.
Leverkusen is one of the most important production locations for Lanxess in Germany, with more than 17 production facilities, which are all connected to each other via pipeline systems. Saltigo, a subsidiary of Lanxess, relocated its headquarters to the Leverkusen site in September 2013. Saltigo is engaged in the manufacture of ingredients for insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and insect repellents at Leverkusen.
Up to 500 employees of Lanxess are involved in the aromatics network, which manufactures and markets nearly 300,000t of high-quality intermediates a year.
