BASF commissioned a new aromatics plant at its Antwerp site in Belgium in January 2000.
BASF commissioned a new aromatics plant at its Antwerp site in Belgium in January 2000.

The BASF aromatics plant was first built in Antwerp in 1969.

The plant is ideally positioned to transport chemicals to Europe and worldwide.

The plant's ethylene output will be increased from 800,000t/y to 1.08 million t/y.

SKEC has a vast experience of developing projects and has already successfully completed the ATC Aromatics and Reformer Complex I project in Map Ta Phut in Thailand on a turn key basis including responsibility for commissioning and performance test runs. Over the last decade, SKEC has compiled a comprehensive record in petrochemical and chemical plant projects.

Sohar Industrial Estate is situated 220kms from Muscat and 180kms from Dubai. Apart from the major projects now being implemented, including the Aromatics Oman facility, there are 28 industries in production, 18 under construction and 44 projects coming up in the near future.

Honeywell’s Experion™ Process Knowledge Systems (PKS) unifies people using process, business and asset management tools allow organisations to gather, view, analyse and act on information more quickly than ever before.

Heating and cooling are essential parts of most industrial processes. These functions have to be performed in an energy-saving way based on highly efficient heat transfer solutions. Alfa Laval supplies a broad range of heat exchangers for heating, cooling, evaporation and condensation.

The third aromatic project is located in Iran's Petrochemical Special Economic Zone. The project was started in 1999 and completed during 2004.

Output from the plant includes paraxylene, orthoxylene and benzene. These products have a number of applications including the production of terephthalic acid, polyester, detergents and solvents.

The Special Economic Zone (Petzone) has been developed to allow rapid implementation of new projects and utilise Iran's abundant oil reserves. The existing docks of the Petzone are being expanded. To date there are 37 jetties and the Ports and Shipping Organisation.

Singapore is the main centre for the Shell Group's petrochemicals operations in Asia Pacific. Among the many assets operated there is the styrene monomer/propylene oxide plant owned by Ellba Eastern, a 50:50 joint venture between Shell and BASF.

Uses of styrene monomer (SM): lightweight drinks cups, which are made of crystal polystyrene, are among the many everyday objects derived from styrene. Shell chemicals companies are among the world's leading styrene manufacturers. (photos courtesy of Shell Chemicals)

The new aromatics plant in Jurong will cost $2bn to construct.

Jurong Island already has over 80 companies involved in petrochemicals.

Jurong Island is ideally placed for petrochemicals plants as it has a deepwater port and is situated near to Asian customers.

The plant will produce a huge range of aromatics including 200,000t of orthoxylene.

Paraxylene is required for the manufacture of PET.
