Wacker Chemie to expand VAE dispersion plant in China
Wacker Chemie is investing €40m to expand its vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer (VAE) dispersion plant in Nanjing, China.
Wacker will add a new reactor at its existing VAE facility with a capacity of 60,000 metric tonnes per year (mtpa), which will double VAE dispersions at the site to 120,000mtpa.
The new reactor is expected to be commissioned in mid-2013.
As part of the expansion, the company is also building a 20,000mtpa polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) solid resins plant, which is due for completion in early 2013.
VAE dispersions are used in the construction, coatings and adhesives industries, while PVAc solid resins are used in industrial applications and to manufacture gumbase.
Wacker Chemie executive board Auguste Willems said these expansion measures are necessary to keep pace with the company's customers' robust demand for VAE dispersions and polyvinyl acetate solid resins in the future.
Wacker Chemie executive board Auguste Willems said: "By expanding our integrated site in Nanjing, we will strengthen our position as one of the world's leading manufacturers of polymer dispersions and gumbase resin."
The company expects to gain advantages and synergies and achieve economies of scale through common infrastructure and energy supply by bundling both VAE dispersions and PVAc solid resins activities at a single site.
Wacker Chemie's other products include silicone rubbers, polymer products like ethylene vinyl acetate redispersible polymer powder, chemical materials, polysilicon and wafers for semiconductor industry.
