Tianjin Soda begins methanol plant operations

China's Tianjin Soda has commenced operations at its new 500,000 metric tonne per year methanol plant in the Binhai harbour industrial area in northeastern China.

Originally scheduled for July 2010, the startup had been delayed several times due to weather conditions, technical issues and poor market conditions, Platts reports.

The company said the plant is currently operating at less than 50% capacity, but it anticipates to increase the production capacity next month.

Tianjin Soda owns a 200,000 metric tonne per year acetic acid plant downstream from its methanol plant and is expected to start up by the end of this month.
