A Schulman expands plastics compounding capacity in Germany

US-based high-performance plastic compounds, composites, powders and resins provider A Schulman has expanded its compounding capacity by adding two new production lines at the Kerpen plant in Germany.

Additionally, the company has invested in a fully automatic packaging line.

A Schulman Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) senior vice-president and general manager Heinrich Lingnau said: "The additional compounding capacity will address the continued growth in high-performance compounds.

"This investment is indeed aligned with the expansion of our product portfolio, and in particular with the production of our new range of compounds."

"With this investment A Schulman is supporting the increasing customer demand for current and future developments in the automotive as well as electrical and electronics markets."

The company employs around 5,000 people at 58 manufacturing facilities across the globe. It serves packaging, mobility, building and construction, electronics and electrical, agriculture, personal care and hygiene, sports, leisure and home, custom services, and other sectors.

A Schulman EMEA engineering plastics vice-president Horst Klink said: "This investment is indeed aligned with the expansion of our product portfolio, and in particular with the production of our new range of Ecotran PPS compounds.

"In addition, it will increase our flexibility in production to better serve our customers with tailor-made specialty compounds."

Last year, the company expanded its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) compounding capacity at its Bornem masterbatch plant in Belgium.

The newly added capacity in the Belgium site is marketed under the brand name of PolyPet and with the expansion the company aims to provide customised food packaging solutions.

During the initial stage, the expanded facility produced additive concentrates and white PET masterbatch.
