Sasol orders MHI main ethylene compressor trains

Sasol, an international integrated energy and chemical company, has placed an order for the purchase of the main ethylene compressor trains from MHI Compressor International.

Sasol said the main ethylene compressor trains are expected to form a critical long-lead item for the ethane cracker.

Built at Lake Charles, Louisiana, US, the ethane cracker has started the front-end engineering and design phase.

Sasol US Mega Projects executive vice president Johan du Preez said the placement of the order has secured vital manufacturing capacity of the specialty equipment before the expected growth of the market.

"Built at Lake Charles, Louisiana, US, the ethane cracker has started the front-end engineering and design phase."

"Sasol selected MHI Compressor International Corporation because of its reputation as a leading manufacturer and one of the few that have the capability to manufacture equipment of this size and nature," Preez added.

Sasol has also chosen the UNIPOL Polyethylene Process of Univation Technologies and the tubular process technology from ExxonMobil Chemical Technology Licensing to use at its Louisiana-based new linear low density polyethylene and low density polyethylene plants respectively.

Sasol North American operations global chemicals senior group executive Andre de Ruyter said: "This forms part of Sasol's strategy of building globally competitive downstream facilities and adding value to the already low cost ethylene production opportunity in North America."
