Samsung Total Petrochemicals, a joint venture of Samsung General Chemicals and Total Petrochemical, will use Netherlands-based LyondellBasell's Lupotech T process technology to build a 200 kilo tonnes per year (tpa) low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer production plant at its petrochemical complex in Daesan, South Korea.
The new LDPE and EVA copolymer plants are expected to commence operations in 2013.
"This is our second Polyolefin process technology licensed to Samsung Total in the last six years, which builds upon a solid relationship that will continue well into the future," said LyondellBasell Technology senior vice president Bob Patel.
Lupotech T technology features include low manufacturing and investment costs, fast start-up and grade changes, high on-stream factor, and production capacities of up to 450 kilo tpa.
Samsung Total also operates a 250 kilo tpa polypropylene plant at the Daesan petrochemical complex, which uses licensed LyondellBasell's Spherizone technology.
In addition to Lupotech T and Spherizone technologies, LyondellBasell also provides Spherilene, a flexible, gas-phase process technology used for the production of low linear density polyethylene (LLDPE), medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
Other technologies offered by LyondellBasell include Hostalen, which is used to produce multimodal HDPE, Spheripol to produce homopolymer, random and heterophasic copolymers; and Metocene PP for the production of specialty polypropylene products using single-site catalyst systems.
LyondellBasell manufactures products and technologies at 58 sites in 18 countries, which include packaging, electronics, automotive components, home furnishings, construction materials and biofuels.
The company also grants licences to more than 250 polyolefin process technologies, including polypropylene and polyethylene.
Samsung Total Petrochemicals produces olefins, base petrochemicals, byproduct fuels and solvents, and operates 13 petrochemicals plants in South Korea's Chungnam Province.
