16 February 2012

Qatar Petroleum (QP) has entered into a heads of agreement (HOA) with Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) to jointly develop a new mega-petrochemical complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar.

The new petrochemical plant will produce 1.4 million tonnes per annum (tpa) of ethylene, 850,000tpa of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), 430 kilo tpa of linear low-density polyethylene, 760 kilo tpa of polypropylene, and 83 kilo tpa of butadiene.

The new complex, which comprises a world-scale steam cracker and feedstock coming from natural gas plants in Ras Laffan, is expected to complete construction in 2018.

Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Qatar Petroleum's minister of energy and industry, managing director and chairman, said: "This mega-project is yet another major step in our progress towards sustainable development of Qatar's vast hydrocarbon resources as envisioned by His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani."

Al-Sada added: "It is an important milestone in the industrial development of the State of Qatar, especially for its petrochemical industry."

Under the agreement, Qatar Petroleum will have an 80% equity interest in the project, while QAPCO will hold the remaining 20%.

QAPCO chairman Hamad Rashid Al-Mohannadi said: "It is definitely a key milestone in our long journey to become a significant global petrochemicals producer from the GCC region."

QAPCO is involved in the production of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) which are used in thermoplastics processing techniques with applications such as packaging films, agricultural film, extrusion and coating lamination film, high clarity film, injection molding, foamed and other products.
