QAPCO to open Qatar-based LDPE 3 facility
The Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) will open its QAR 2.3bn ($623m) low density polyethylene (LDPE) 3 petrochemical facility on 20 November 2012 at Mesaieed Industrial City.
The LDPE 3 facility forms part of the company's Qatar National Vision 2030.
QAPCO's present manufacturing facilities consist of an 800 KTPA (kilo-ton per annum) ethylene plant, a 70 KTPA sulphur processing facility and two pre-existing LDPE plants, with a capacity of 400,000 MTPA.
The new LDPE 3 is designed to take advantage of the company's excess ethylene feedstock to produce 300,000mtpy of LDPE upon becoming functional, therefore increasing QAPCO's annual production of LDPE to 700,000mtpa.
The LDPE 3 facility that began its construction in 2009 has been producing commercial prime grade LDPE since mid-August 2012.
QAPCO vice chairman and chief executive officer Dr. Mohammed Yousef Al-Mulla said no stone was left unturned in the quest to deliver the facility.
"The EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contract was awarded to the German firm Udhe, which has extensive experience in constructing facilities for the petrochemical industry. In addition, our technology is licensed by Bassell, another global giant in the sector," Al-Mulla added.
"QAPCO has some of the most stringent safety regulations; even meeting and exceeding international standards. Thus hitting nearly 13 million man-hours with no loss of time is a milestone by any standard."
The company will sell the LPDE 3 products under the brand name 'Lotrène' through QAPCO's global marketing network, which has nearly 30-self operated offices, in addition to the logistic facilities.
