Momentive Specialty Chemicals has signed a joint venture agreement with UPC Technology to produce phenolic resins.
The joint venture company, Momentive Union Specialty Chemicals, will build its first manufacturing plant at an existing UPC Technology Chemical manufacturing complex in Zhenjiang in Jiangsu province, China.
The plant will be used to produce a full range of speciality novolac and resole phenolic resins, which will be sold under trade names including Bakelite resins and Durite resins.
The materials are used in various applications including abrasives, electronics and refractories.
Momentive Union general manager Ian Harris said they believe Momentive's leadership in phenolic resins technology, jointly with the UPC's regional strength and infrastructure, will form a formidable new player in the Greater China marketplace for these versatile materials.
"The Zhenjiang project will broaden the companies' capability to meet growing demand from customers in China with local manufacturing and solutions tailored to their specific applications," Harris added.
Momentive Union said they will start the construction phase in early 2012 after engineering design work and permitting has been finished.
The completion and commissioning of plant is slated for the first quarter of 2013.
Momentive has advanced speciality products and is also involved in using its technology portfolio to help and support industrial and consumer companies diverse needs and improve their everyday life.
