Malaysian petrochemicals producer Petronas Chemicals has awarded the basic and detailed engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning alliance contract for its $1.5m fertiliser complex, which will be built at the Sipitang oil and gas industrial park in Sabah.

The Sabah Ammonia-Urea (SAMUR) project includes a consortium of contractors, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Apex Energy and Rekayasa Industri.

Under the contract, the SAMUR Project will be carried out on the basis of a cooperative relationship between project owner and the consortium.

The complex will consist of an ammonia plant, a urea plant, a granulation plant and as well as integrated utility units and jetty facilities.

The ammonia plant will produce 2,100t/day of liquid ammonia, while the urea plant will produce 3,500t/day of granulated urea.

Construction is expected to start in the second quarter of 2012 with completion targeted for 2015.
