Lanxess expands neodymium polybutadiene rubber capacity

Lanxess has expanded the production capacities of neodymium polybutadiene rubber at its sites in Dormagen in Germany, Cabo in Brazil and Orange in Texas, US.

The company is also planning a €200m neodymium polybutadiene rubber plant in Singapore, which is scheduled to come onstream in 2015.

The expansion has created a 25% increase in high-performance synthetic rubbers for tyre industry.

In addition, Lanxess has started a feasibility study at its Triunfo site in Brazil to deploy new technology in order to switch production of emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber, which is used in standard tyres, to solution styrene butadiene rubber, which is used in 'green' tyres.

Neodymium polybutadiene is used in the treads and sidewalls of green tyres to help reduce its rolling resistance and increase fuel efficiency.
