Kuraray, Sumitomo and PTTGC to study potential development of butadiene

Kuraray has signed a head of agreement (HOA) with Sumitomo and PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC) to jointly perform a feasibility study for potential development of manufacturing and sales of butadiene derivatives in Thailand.

After completing the joint feasibility study for potential development of butadiene derivatives in Thailand, Kuraray, PTTGC and Sumitomo will proceed with the project to the early phase of engineering study to perform front-end engineering design.

The final investment decision (FID) will be made before the end of next year.

The joint feasibility study aims to initiate operations of 13kta High-Heat Resistant Polyamide-9T (PA9T) and 16kta Hydrogenated Styrenic Block Copolymers (HSBC) in Hemaraj Eastern Industrial Estate, Rayong, in Thailand in late-2020.

"Operations are slated to begin in late-2020."

Kuraray also plans to independently conduct a feasibility study on 5kta 3-Methyl-1,5-Pentanediol (MPD), which is one of Kuraray’s Isobutene derivatives.

The FID will be made by the end of next year and operations are slated to begin in late-2020. Isobutene as a key raw material will be supplied by PTTGC in the industrial area.

Kuraray also plans to expand butadiene and Isobutene derivatives globally in combination with the competitive supply of raw material and utilities from PTTGC and PTT group, and Sumitomo’s global trade network.
