Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemicals starts Honeywell UOP Methanol-to-Olefins unit

Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical company has started Honeywell’s UOP Advanced Methanol-to-Olefins (MTO) unit during a ten-day test to confirm its successful operation.

Once the complete unit goes on line, it will produce 833,000mt annually, making it the largest single-train MTO unit in the world.

Honeywell UOP process technology and equipment business vice-president and general manager Mike Millard said: "We expect China to invest more than $100bn in coal-to-chemicals technology in the next five years.

"With China's demand growth for propylene of 7% per year, ethylene demand growing nearly 6%, and butadiene at almost 4%, our advanced MTO process provides an excellent solution to meet that demand."

Jiangsu Sailboat has selected Honeywell UOP's Advanced MTO process as it produces the highest yields of light olefins with minimum production cost and catalyst consumption.

"We expect China to invest more than $100bn in coal-to-chemicals technology in the next five years."

Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical is a wholly owned subsidiary of Shenghong Holding Group, which is based in Lianyungang City in China's Jiangsu Province.

Jiangsu Sailboat’s facility manufactures propylene to produce acrylonitrile, which is used in clothing and fabrics manufacturing, as well as high-performance polymers used in automotive parts, hard hats and other hard plastic products.

The facility also produces a wide range of products including ethylene for production of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers that are used for producing adhesives, foams, medical devices, photovoltaic cells, and other products.

C4 olefin are used for manufacturing butadiene, an ingredient in synthetic rubber, is also produced at this plant.
