India's Directorate General of Anti-Dumping & Allied Duties, part of the commerce ministry, has proposed to impose anti-dumping duties ranging from $11.55/t to $38.38/t on imports of soda ash from the EU, China, Iran and Ukraine.
An increase in import duties of soda ash may affect detergent manufacturers in the country, as the chemical is a key input in their production, reports The Economic Times.
Domestic detergent prices could rise by 10-12% because of the anti-dumping duty on soda ash, according to industry estimates.
The government has evidence of injury to domestic producers due to dumping of soda ash by certain countries.
The commerce ministry could impose provisional duties, which would be replaced by final duties after the government completes a review.
