Evonik to build new methionine production complex in Singapore
Evonik Industries is investing €500m to build a new methionine production complex on Jurong Island, Singapore, to broaden its core business of essential amino acids used for animal nutrition.
Evonik said that the new complex will not only produce 150,000t/year of methionine amino acid, but will also produce all necessary raw materials required for the production process.
The company announced that the main engineering and raw material contracts have been already awarded and the construction's preliminary work has already started.
The new plant is scheduled to commence the company's operations in the second half of 2014 and will also employ several hundred people.
Evonik estimates that new methionine production complex will raise its total annual capacity for methionine amino acid to 580,000t/year, an increase of more than 60% in just five years.
Evonik Industries CEO Klaus Engel said the major investment should bring them nearer to their customers in Asia and makes them a reliable, long-term partner.
Evonik Industries health and nutrition business unit head Reiner Beste said that by taking this step in Singapore, they will enjoy a presence in all world regions, as is achievable with modern and highly efficient production facilities.
"We've consistently expanded our existing facilities in North America and Europe over the years to meet the increasing demand of our customers," Beste said.
Evonik is involved in the production of all four essential amino acids for modern animal nutrition including Biolys (L-lysine), MetAMINO (DL-methionine), ThreAMINO (L-threonine), and TrypAMINO (L-tryptophan).
Evonik's DL-methionine is an indispensable amino acid which is used as healthy and sustainable animal nutrition.
