Bio-On to produce special biopolymers

23 November 2016

Italian Intellectual Property Company (IPC) Bio-On has announced its 2017-20 industrial plan for the bioplastic sector involving a new plant.

Under its new plan, the company intends to produce its own special biopolymers at a new 1,000tpa plant, which is expected to be complete next year.

The company said that it has invested €15m for the new plant. It added that the special bioplastics production would boost the company's existing research and development of 100% biodegradable biopolymers.

"PHAs are bioplastics that have the potential to replace traditional polymers produced through petrochemical processes using hydrocarbons."

Bio-on chairman and CEO Marco Astorri said: "We are proud to contribute to such an important sector for human health. We will continue to do so by extending our direct presence even more in the cosmetics, biomedical and nanomedical sectors."

Currently, the company holds around 50 patents and the new production division will exploit the new patents and products developed particularly for cosmetics. Bio-on is planning to offer products for cosmetics from 2018.

Bio-on produces eco-sustainable chemical technologies and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). PHAs are bioplastics that have the potential to replace traditional polymers produced through petrochemical processes using hydrocarbons.

PHAs produced by Bio-on offer similar thermo-mechanical properties and are naturally biodegradable once used.
