Asahi Kasei to build second S-SBR plant in Singapore

Asahi Kasei Chemicals has decided to advance plans to build a second solution-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) plant near Tembusu district, Jurong Island, Singapore.

The facility, which will have a capacity of 50,000t/year, is being built adjacent to an S-SBR plant of the same capacity that is currently under construction.

Construction of the first plant began in June 2011, with start-up is scheduled for May 2013. Start-up of the second plant is scheduled for January 2015.

SBR, a synthetic copolymer comprising styrene and butadiene, is used in various applications, including tyre production.

According to the company, modified S-SBR improves the balance of a tyre's performance characteristics, including abrasion resistance, safety and fuel efficiency.

Asahi Kasei Chemicals will make proactive capital investments to expand its S-SBR operations as strategic world-leading business under the Asahi Kasei Group's 'For Tomorrow 2015' mid-term management initiative introduced in April.
