PetroChina's proposal to double the refining capacity of its Huabei plant has been approved.
The company will increase the capacity of the refinery to ten million tonnes a year, and the expanded facility should start production in December 2012, parent China National Petroleum said.
The plant will annually supply up to eight million tonnes of high-quality refined fuels and other petrochemical products to Beijing and Tianjin, as well as to other north China regions.
The company is also planning to build petrochemical units at the refinery, including a one million tons per year ethylene plant.
