Chemetall Foote, a subsidiary of Rockwood Holdings, has awarded a contract to US-based KBR group to help expand the production of lithium hydroxide at its Kings Mountain facility in North Carolina, US.
Chemetall, which is planning to spend $34m on the project, said KBR will provide engineering and procurement services for the plant.
The company said it received a $28.4m grant under the US Recovery and Reinvestment Act to part fund the expansion.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
Chemtall will also receive the remainder of a $56.8m grant for its Silver Peak, Nevada, US plant.
