Showa Denko KK (SDK) and Antam are planning to build a chemical alumina plant in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, with an investment of $450m.
The new plant, Indonesia Chemical Alumina, will have a capacity of 300,000 tons per year, of which Japanese chemical company SDK will take 200,000 tons per year and Antam 100,000 tons per year.
SDK currently produces 200,000 tons per year of chemical alumina at Yokohama, Japan, and is planning to discontinue the plant’s production, replacing it with the Indonesian plant output.
The new plant will be owned 80% by Antam and 20% by SDK, with Antam supplying the bauxite for the plant and SDK providing the chemical alumina manufacturing technology.
The facility will be completed in December 2013, with operations scheduled for January 2014.
