Sasol and Gassnova to Participate in European CO2 Technology Centre

Sasol has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Norway's Gassnova SF to participate in the European CO2 Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) under development in Mongstad on Norway's west coast.

Sasol CE Pat Davies said the MoU is an important development that will support the company's commitment to lowering its greenhouse gas emissions.

"Sasol will continue to contribute to South Africa's fuel security through its coal-to-liquid fuel technology for some time to come. While there is no single solution to the reduction of GHG emissions, we participate in a number of initiatives such as TCM to find the optimum mix of solutions," Davies said.

"We have set targets to reduce our carbon footprint and, through sound partnerships with the best minds from across the globe, we will produce innovative solutions."

Apart from Gassnova SF, which represents Norway in the TCM project, other partners in TCM include A/S Norske Shell and Statoil ASA.

TCM is an international technology cooperation that tests, verifies and demonstrates technology ideal for use at large-scale CO2 capture facilities.

The test facilities are expected to capture 100,000t of CO2 annually.

TCM will become operational at the end of 2011.
