Johnson Matthey Opens US Diesel Catalyst Facility

20 August 2009

US speciality chemicals maker Johnson Matthey will open a new emissions control catalyst manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania, US, the company has announced.

The $43m facility in Smithfield will produce selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts used to reduce diesel emission from automobiles, for the US, which will have stricter heavy duty diesel emissions standards in place from January 2010 to control nitrogen oxide emission.

The existing Tier 2 emission standard phase out for light duty vehicles and non-road heavy duty diesel emission standards during 20117ndash;14 will also increase demand for SCR catalysts, Johnson director of commercial development and marketing Marty Lassen said.

The plant employs 40 people and Johnson plans to create about 110 manufacturing jobs in total at the site.
