Royal DSM, Roquette to Open Bio-Based Succinic Acid Plant in Italy
Royal DSM and French starch-maker Roquette Frères are to build a commercial scale plant for the production of bio-based succinic acid in Cassano Spinola, Italy.
The plant will use a non-fossil feedstock-derived chemical building block that allows customers in the chemical industry to choose a bio-based alternative with a lower eco-footprint for a range of applications, from packaging to footwear.
The plant will have a capacity to produce about 10,000t of succinic acid per year.
The firms suggested that the plant will be Europe's largest bio-based succinic acid facility.
Financial details of the investment were not disclosed.
Succinic acid is a chemical building block used in the manufacture of polymers, resins, food and pharmaceuticals.
