Italy Imposes Ban on Single-Use Polyethylene Bags

Italy has imposed a ban on single-use polyethylene-based retail carryout bags, becoming the first EU country to impose such a measure.

The plastic bag ban was adopted on 22 December 2010 and came into effect on 1 January 2011.

According to Italian environment group Legabiente, annual plastic bag use in Italy had been around 20 billion plastic bags.

However, retail stores and supermarkets will be allowed to use up their stock of plastic bags.

The ban has been imposed following a petition from citizens appealing for it, according to plasticsnews.com.
