Asahi Kasei to construct polycarbonatediol plant in China

Japanese chemicals producer Asahi Kasei Chemicals (ASK) will construct a new plant for producing Duranol polycarbonatediol (PCD) in China.

PCD serves as a precursor for production of high-performance polyurethanes, with enhanced heat and water resistance.

The new 3,000t/year capacity plant is expected to help the company address the demand for highly functional PCD, which is forecast to grow briskly throughout Asia and especially in China.

"PCD serves as a precursor for production of high-performance polyurethanes, with enhanced heat and water resistance."

In addition, the facility, the company claims, will reaffirm its position as a major supplier of highly functional materials to high-performance polyurethanes manufacturers, including Duranate hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)-based polyisocyanate.

Construction will start in Spring 2014, while start up is scheduled for early 2015.

Currently manufactured by ASK at its plant in its Mizushima Works, Kurashiki, Japan, Duranol is a highly functional PCD and enables polyurethanes to be obtained with greater softness, when compared with ordinary PCD.

Duranol represents the leading share of the Asian PCD market for polyurethanes for synthetic leather in automotive interiors, polyurethane coatings and UV-curable polyurethanes.
