Polylactic acid and polyglycolic acid are biodegradable, thermoplastic materials, and are increasingly being used in a diverse range of industries, for example biomedical applications such as absorbable sutures and medical implant hardware.
The high demand for these materials stems from the fact that they degrade via hydrolysis of the ester
linkage into the natural metabolic by-products lactic acid and glycolic acid, which minimises toxicity and health risks.
In order to fine-tune the degradation rates of the final polymeric products, the two constituent monomers are frequently combined. The result of this copolymerisation is poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) or PLGA.
