The First Rupture Disk with 100% Operating Ratio

31 October 2007

For process plants requiring the highest operating performance in gas or liquid service, BS&B Safety Systems offers the SIGMA EXL™ reverse buckling rupture disk designed for a 100% operating ratio.

The SIGMA EXL rupture disk may be operated right up to its minimum burst pressure under static or cyclic load conditions, exceeding the traditional rupture disk technology by at least 5%. Whether for primary relief or relief valve isolation, the superior performance of the SIGMA EXL disk translates into the ability to safely operate processes closer to their design pressure.

Available in nominal sizes from one to eight centimetres and at burst pressures from 15psig to 500psig in a range of corrosion resistant materials including stainless steel and hastelloy, the SIGMA EXL rupture disk can be applied to a wide range of process industry applications.

The disk's circular opening pattern results in activation without fragmentation as well as excellent flow characteristics. The low 0.38 Krg flow resistance value for the SIGMA EXL disk makes it an excellent choice for relief valve isolation where low pressure drop to the valve inlet is required.

The SIGMA EXL uses SAF™ Technology, only available from BS&B. SAF Technology ensures that an inadvertently damaged disk will rupture at or below its marked burst pressure; this is referred to as a damage safety ratio of one or less.

RUPTURE DISK DEVICES COMBINED WITH SAFETY RELIEF VALVES

Rupture disks are non-reclosing pressure relief devices that seal process fluid from the atmosphere. When excessive pressure occurs, the disk immediately opens at a predetermined value and protects process equipment from the hazards of overpressure. The excellent sealing characteristics of a rupture disk device are often combined with safety relief valves to provide a reclosing pressure relief, thereby achieving the best containment of the process fluid. SIGMA EXL provides operating characteristics well matched to safety relief valves making this the ideal combination.
