BuraTAL HT – the New Universal Clean Air Seal Set for Valve Spindles

14 November 2007

Current clean air regulations place stringent demands on the ability of valve spindle seals to prevent the escape of volatile emissions. By 2007, all new and existing industrial equipment in Germany will have to meet European regulations (IPC Directive 96/61/EC) and national regulations (e.g. the TA-Luft 2002 clean air act), and the equipment will have to be brought up to the appropriate technical standard.

The German producer Burgmann Industries has developed the new BuraTAL-HT seal set for use on new installations or for retrofits on all valves in the chemical, petrochemical, refinery and process industries. The seals are resistant to nearly all chemicals (solvents, hydrocarbons, acids and alkalis), steam, alcohol, water, oils, etc. (with the exception of powerful oxidizing agents such as hot sulphuric acid and nitric acid).

This new seal set guarantees compliance with VDI leakage guidelines over the entire temperature range between -200°C and +400°C. The leakage rate does not exceed 10-4 mbar*l(s*m). The sophisticated geometry of the sealing rings, which maintains constant surface pressure on the seal set, ensures controlled operation.

There is no need for an additional live loading system. The special geometry covers a wide tolerance range, and the seals adapt very well to the spindle and housing. Up to 80% lower friction compared to standard graphite seal systems is another advantage. Overall, the BuraTAL HT offers users excellent opportunities for standardization and cost savings.
