Many specifications advise partial stroke testing on ESD valves. This test is necessary as we all can remember the tragic Piper Alpha accident.
At the moment several systems are available on the market, however, Netherlocks try to keep theirs simple and capable of accomplishing a partial stroke test without the use of computers and wiring.
If a Netherlocks is installed between the valve and actuator, the maximum rotation that can be made is 20° in case it is in partial stroke mode.
To bring it in partial stroke mode a key has to be inserted. This key is normally held in the control room.
The advantage of a mechanical partial stroke is that the field components, like solenoid valve and quick exhaust are also tested.
Even in the case a field device fails, the actuator will not run to its close position, therefore avoiding a complete shut down.
The Netherlocks FAITH is applicable for all types and sizes of actuators and immediately mountable.
