Clariant - Colorants, Optical Brighteners and Chemicals for Paper Production

Clariant has a significant range of colorants, optical brightening agents and chemicals, providing powerful, cost-effective and consistent solutions to a multitude of problems which can arise in paper production.

COLORANTS - DYES AND PIGMENTS

Clariant has some of the most technologically advanced dye and pigment products available to the papermaker today. With state-of-the-art production processes, Clariant is able to offer colorants with excellent environmental profiles. The goal is to have stable formulations based on active content and water only with a "zero contribution to effluent" policy.

  • Cartasol® F & K Dyes: highly substantive direct dyes, specially developed for the paper industry
  • Cartasol® HP Range: highly substantive anionic direct dyes with extremely good environmental profiles
  • Cartasol® M Dyes: cationic dyes, suitable for dyeing mechanical and waste-based furnishes
  • Carta®: specially selected, conventional, anionic, substantive direct dyes
  • Cartazine: traditional, basic dyestuffs
  • Diresul® P: liquid sulphur dyes with improved toxicological profiles
  • Cartaren®: organic pigment preparations based on anionic tensides
  • Flexonyl® LAP: technically advanced pigment preparations range, developed particularly for laminate papers

OPTICAL BRIGHTENING AGENTS

Clariant is the only major OBA producer to have an R&D team dedicated specifically to paper. This investment enables us to produce innovative products that meet the needs of specific papers and processes.

  • Leucophor®: extensive range of di-sulphonated, hexa-sulphonated and tetra-sulphonated OBAs for all applications

CHEMICALS FOR PAPER PRODUCTION

Clariant's range of chemicals for paper production includes surface sizing agents, surface strength improvers, coating additives, antistatics, barrier and functional coatings, fluorochemicals and dye fixatives, as well as chemicals for deposit control, retention and drainage, foam control, and softening and creping.

Surface Sizing Agents:

  • Cartacol®: surface treatment range of chemicals to improve sizing, printability and toner adhesion
  • Cerol®: range of concentrated, cationic water-repellent, release and sizing agent for the surface finishing of a wide variety of paper and board

Surface Strength Improvers:

  • Cartabond®: range of multipurpose, cost effective, formaldehyde-free surface strength improvers; crosslinker of natural and synthetic binders in size press and coating formulations

Coating Additives:

  • Cartacoat®: for coated offset and ink-jet paper

Antistatics:

  • Elfugin® AKT liquid: highly effective, anionic, phosphate ester antistatic agent for surface treatment of specialist papers

Barrier and Functional Coatings:

  • Cartaseal® F, S, T and V ranges: environmentally friendly coating concept providing superior barrier properties to oil, water and water vapour
  • Cartaseal®: range of anti-slip coatings providing increased coefficient of friction, enabling paper products to be used as, e,g. transit packaging inter-leavers, catering tray mats, paper reel end roundels, etc.
  • Cartaflam: novel group of flame retardant treatments and coatings for paper and board

Fluorochemicals:

  • Cartafluor®: range of highly efficient anionic, fluorochemicals for grease and oil resistance, used at the surface or wet end; approved by the FDA and BfR for use in food-contact paper and board

Dye Fixatives:

  • Cartafix® and Cartaretin®: economical fixatives for anionic direct dyes and an auxiliary for dyeing with cationic direct dyes; improves two-sidedness and dyestuff yield

Deposit Control:

  • Cartafix: range of highly charged, formaldehyde-free, cross-linked, cationic polymers for the treatment and control of interfering substances; very good at combating latex deposits, controlling pitch, improving runnability and reducing effluent loading
  • Cartaspers: range of nonionic hydrophilic polymers with strong affinity for hydrophobic surfaces; modifies surface energy of machine wires and felts to reduce pitch and stickies contamination; dispersing action prevents agglomeration of contaminants

Retention and Drainage:

  • Cartaretin range: range of highly efficient, cost-effective, anionic and cationic polymers used for retention, drainage and fibre recovery
  • Cartafen® technology: novel, efficient two-component retention aid system for use in grades made from pulps highly contaminated with soluble and colloidal impurities and containing high levels of mechanical pulp

Foam Control:

  • Antimussol® range: products are available for all segments of the pulp and paper industry and most comply with food contact regulations

Softening and Crêping:

  • Cartaflex®: products for cylinder adhesion control and softening in the production of crêped tissue and handtowelling

Others:

  • Cartan®: bleaching enhancers
  • Cartax®: fluorescent marking
  • Cartasorb: surfactants
