STAINLESS STEEL WELDED PROCESS PIPES

Welded process pipes are used primarily in the chemical and petrochemical, pulp and paper industries to ensure operational reliability. Pipes in chemical tankers and for the handling of water, such as in pipelines, sewage and desalination plants, are other important applications.

Process pipes are found in many different types of equipment such as coolers and evaporators. Austenitic steels such as 304(L) and 316(L) have been the dominant steels, but in applications and equipment that require higher resistance to corrosion, grades like the duplex stainless steels 2205 and SAF 2507® and the high alloyed austenitic steels 904L and 254SMO® are the preferred options.

The major part of the process pipes is produced in our two main factories in Torshälla (Sweden) and Jacobstad (Finland). When choosing pipes with a larger diameter and heavy wall thickness the pipes are produced in our designated pipe mill in Storfors (Sweden).

STAINLESS STEEL WELDED HEAT EXCHANGER TUBES

Another important group of products available from Outokumpu is stainless steel welded heat exchanger tubes. They are used in all kind of industries, primarily in tubular heat exchangers. These tubes are produced in Fagersta (Sweden), offering a wide range of customised solutions regarding materials and executions:

• Solution annealed and pickled
• Inline bright annealed
• Inline annealed, externally pickled
• Electro polished
• Externally ground
• Internally polished (mechanically)

The manufacturing capability covers both straight and coiled tubes.

LIFE CYCLE COST OF MATERIALS

The usual method of comparing the initial cost, i.e. the cost of acquisition plus installation, can lead to incorrect conclusions. The knowledge gained from experience and other sources concerning the service life of different materials in different environments has made it possible to adopt a more long-term perspective with regard to life cycle costs (LCC).

A short-term installation will have a low initial cost if a carbon steel or a low-alloyed steel is chosen. However, more maintenance will be required, interrupting production and causing the risk for production losses to be much greater, resulting in a high life cycle cost.

The long-term stainless steel option would imply a higher initial cost, but less maintenance and a reliable operation.
