New Dip Probe Points the Way for Spectral Analysis of Powders and Thick Fluids

05 April 2002 15:48

A versatile new diffuse reflectance probe now enables Camspec's M400 fibre-optic diode-array UV/Visible Spectrophotometer to measure the colours of powders and thick fluids in situ. Simply dip the stainless steel probe into a sample and obtain full spectra and CIE co-ordinates at the click of a mouse, in less than one second.

Chris Chapman of Thermographic Measurements Limited has praised Camspec's new probe: "We produce temperature indicators, and the diffuse reflectance probe is an ideal instrument for measuring the colour of chromazone blue, one of our thermochromic pigments. It's a thick blue liquid and the dip probe is the only way of giving us fast, accurate readings at a controlled temperature."

The probe's six-around-one fibre configuration maximises the sample illumination, and the 5mm diameter window is at 45 degrees to avoid collecting the specular or directly reflected light from the window and the sample. Supplied as a complete system with either an easy-to-use touch screen or PC, the M400 provides a cheaper solution than near infra-red systems. Comprehensive quantitative analysis, colour measurement and data manipulation functions ensure that the instrument meets requirements for the widest range of applications, such as QA/QC functions in the pharmaceuticals and food industries.

Dr Tony Moss, Camspec Managing Director, highlights two of the main benefits of this innovative technology: "Powders and thick fluids usually pose problems for reflectance spectrum measurement. However, these materials can now be assessed simply by inserting our new probe. Secondly, the combination of a dip probe with a fibre optic lead length of up to 20 metres makes it easy for users to check materials directly in production line or warehouse situations, rather than having to take samples back to a laboratory for assessment."

Based in Cambridge, UK, Camspec are acknowledged experts in UV/Visible Spectrophotometry and their instruments can be found in laboratories on every continent around the world.
